Isolation & Acclimation buying guide
A controlled space inside the display tank
An in-tank isolation or acclimation box creates a temporary physical barrier between livestock while allowing water from the display aquarium to flow through the enclosure. It can help when introducing a new fish, observing interactions, protecting a recovering coral or temporarily separating compatible livestock.
The Crew's Quarters is a corner-mounted reef tank isolation box for fish, coral and anemones. Its open-flow design supports water exchange, and the tank glass forms part of the enclosure to reduce the space it occupies in the display.
Isolation box versus quarantine tank
An isolation box and a quarantine tank serve different purposes.
- An in-display isolation box provides physical separation while livestock shares the display tank's water, temperature and chemistry.
- A separate quarantine tank is an independent system used for disease-management protocols, observation away from the display and treatment when appropriate.
Because water passes between the display and the isolation box, the box does not prevent waterborne pathogens or parasites from reaching the main aquarium. It should not be presented as a replacement for a quarantine process.
Introducing a new fish
A fish introduction box lets established fish see a newcomer without immediate physical contact. Place the enclosure where flow can pass through it and where the animal can shelter from intense light or constant attention if needed. Observe both the new arrival and the display fish for persistent aggression, distress, poor swimming or failure to feed.
There is no universal number of hours or days that suits every fish. Release should depend on the animal's condition, feeding response, behaviour of established livestock and the keeper's acclimation plan. Do not release an animal merely because a fixed period has elapsed.
Coral, anemone and recovery use
Temporary separation may also help protect a coral or anemone from picking or unwanted contact while you observe it. Confirm that the enclosure, flow, lighting and available space suit the livestock. Mobile animals and expanding corals require particular care and supervision.
This product is an isolation and introduction enclosure. Do not assume it is suitable as a breeding box, nursery or long-term habitat unless its dimensions and design have been assessed for that specific use.
Choosing the right fit
The animal needs enough room to turn, rest and maintain normal posture without contacting the enclosure. The Crew's Quarters is corner-mounted and custom sizing is available on request. Contact Reef Ahoy before ordering if you need help assessing a particular animal or tank layout.
Cleaning and care
Remove the box when it is no longer needed. Rinse away detritus and algae, use a soft brush where required and avoid household cleaning chemicals. Inspect the enclosure before each use and ensure water can move freely through the openings.
